When you walk down a busy street you will notice advertisements, businesses, street vendors, government buildings, non profits and such establishments. Camouflage noticeable but vastly increasing are the religious temples. There are so many, it seems we have become socially numb to the concept of religion. The U.S.A. is a great capitol of multiculturalism and belief. While this is great, have we become plagued with religious egocentrism? Religion like other businesses thrive on memberships, donations and various events that raise cash. Without your tithes and donations your church would be no more. Which begs you to look at traditional religious practice and ritual much different. If a gym fails to meet a quota each month, it could be facing a permanent closing. Like the gym, your church has staff and expenses that must be paid each month. Without memberships and donations, who's going to have the choir to perform each sunday? We have to keep the choir director employed. Some may say 'DUH, everyone knows a church is a business!' What's interesting is religion as a whole concept. Is religion various products being pushed? Will religious practice enhance my lifestyle? What are my options with religion? Finding a new religion is like purchasing a car, you have to shop around. They should have a spinning rack at Walgreens with brochures on different religious practices with a instant donation gift card. Religion seems like best selling self help books. It has fantastic principles and excellent values to live by but without proper understanding its useless. Like anything in life, religion is wide open to individual interpretation. What's scary is the individuals with weak interpretations becoming an evangelist of their perception. Have you ever left church feeling worst than you did before you came? Was Jesus, Muhammad, L Ron Hubbard and Akhnaten the Mother Teresa, Oprah Winfrey, Malcolm X and Princess Diana of that time period? Will Oprah Winfrey's perception be followed with religious cult in 1000 years from now? who knows. On must ask these questions. Most religions started out as a single thought and concept of life; a life product. Some religions were and still are taboo in their practice, but in the death of the founders, the views became widely praised and appreciated. You should not advocate the abandonment of religious practice, but see it with objection. The foundation of religions, like a business, is to grow and sell their product (ie: interpretation of life). Organized religion sells its interpretation of life, you buy in and you adapt to it. Even fairly new religions like Scientology has its army of men and women hitting the streets to increase memberships and social acceptance. So next time you think of converting, studying or becoming a member of a new religious cult, think of it as a life product. Not every product works for every consumer. What do you want, a Muslim scarf, Scientology blazer, Kabbalah bracelet, Christian wallet or Jewish purse? The choice is yours, choose which best mirrors your interpretation of life. For me, I'm pondering a Buddhist robe, Scientology blazer or a Hindu headwrap.
